Sam Raincock Consultancy provides a two day course on the topic of Investigating connection records (CDRs) and cell site analysis. The course aims to provide students with an overview of the connection records area including connection charting, correlating evidence with mobile devices and how to effectively investigate cases involving connection records and mobile evidence. An introduction to cell site analysis can also be provided.

Day 1
Four practical exercises after each relevant section.
An Introduction to UK connection records and obtaining the appropriate records for your case – Covering RIPA information, the Data Retention Regulations, Freedom of Information and court orders. Discussing the information available in UK connection records, subscriber information and voicemail.
Connection charting and interpreting connection information – This will cover how to connection chart using paper based or electronic records. Introduction to interpreting the information available in connection records.
Interpreting handset and SIM card evidence – This will address ACPO guidelines for dealing with mobile based evidence. Interpretation of the meaning of evidence on mobile telephone devices. What do the time stamps mean? What about the absence of information? etc. Problems with charting connections using handset examination data.
Combining the evidence in connection records with handset evidence – Combining the two forms of data to potentially provide a more complete listing of connection behaviour. Calculating time offsets for mobile devices and applying this to evidence on the handset. For example, attempting to establish the date and time accuracy of a video/image file captured by a handset.
Day 2
This day will include two small exercise in the morning and a 1 ½ - 2 hour group exercise involving a test case to consolidate the connection record learning.
Recap of previous day and exercise.
Functionality testing with a mobile telephone – What is functionality testing and how to conduct it. When is it necessary and what can it achieve in your case.
Investigating anomalies and differences in connections records – looking at error rates and investigating inconsistencies in records, duplications and other issues that may be present.
An introduction to cell site analysis – introduction to the basics of the area. Discussion of when the analysis can provide useful results. Looking at the limitations and the different kinds of analysis (including server maps etc. and obtaining these from the network providers). Past case examples. Investigating how cell information in records can sometimes assist in providing opinions about telephone connections regarding if they have been answered/received.
